Edo Meiji Period Iron Tsuba, Twelve Zodiac Signs, Compass Rose Design Tsuba
This is a tsuba (hand guard) for a Japanese sword.
It has considerable weight.
The design is a Jūnishi-zu (Hōi-zu) featuring the twelve zodiac animals (Rat, Ox, Tiger, etc.) arranged in a circle. It is an auspicious design symbolizing time, direction, and warding off evil. The reverse side is decorated with motifs reminiscent of constellations and directions, making both sides uniquely crafted.
The material is iron, showing the patina of age (rust and color variations), giving it an antique atmosphere.
It is believed to be from the late Edo to Meiji period, but we have not had it professionally appraised, so please judge the details from the images.
Recommended for collections, display, or as a reference for sword fittings.
