Commemorative Photo of Crown Prince Akihito and Crown Princess Michiko in Traditional Attire, Celebrating Their Marriage in Showa 34 (1959)
This is a highly formal commemorative photograph capturing the Imperial couple during the Wedding Ceremony held in 1959 (Showa 34). It is a historical piece produced during the Mitchi Boom, a period when Japan was enveloped in celebration.
On the left side of the photo, the Emperor Emeritus (His Imperial Highness Prince Akihito) is depicted in his youth, wearing attire close to the traditional ceremonial robe, the Kōrozen no Gōhō, and holding a *shaku* (scepter) in his hand. On the right, the Empress Emerita Michiko is shown in her full ceremonial dress, the Twelve-Layered Kimono (Jūnihitoe), holding a *hiōgi* (cypress fan).
Above their heads, the Imperial crest, the Sixteen-Petaled Double Chrysanthemum (Kiku no Gomon), is centrally placed. Flanking it on either side are depictions of the phoenix, a mythical bird considered an auspicious symbol, reflecting the enthusiasm and joy with which Japan celebrated the dawn of a new era.
The frame also retains its original, substantial construction from that period. The back features a traditional structure seen in the mid-Showa era, with a wooden backboard secured by metal clasps known as tonbo (dragonflies). A hanging bracket for wall mounting is also attached at the top.
It possesses the dignified aura of an authentic item from that era, having endured the passage of time. The surface exhibits foxing, characteristic brown spots on old paper, which are genuine signs of aging due to silver particles and the paper itself, and cannot be removed with chemicals. While the item has been cleaned for this listing, care has been taken not to diminish its historical character.
This is a valuable document that records an extremely significant moment in the tumultuous Showa era and the evolution of the symbolic imperial system. Its presence, seemingly preserving the fervor and formal atmosphere of that time, offers a rare texture that is difficult to obtain today.
This piece, symbolizing the memories of Japan from that era, will strongly convey the spirit of the Showa period, whether displayed in a traditional alcove, a guest room, or as part of a historical collection.
