Kawanabe Kyōsai (かわなべ きょうさい)

One of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo and Meiji periods, his works captivate viewers with their bold compositions and unique humor. In particular, his depictions of beautiful women and landscapes have garnered widespread support and continue to be loved across generations.

Birth and Death: 1831 - 1889

A Japanese painter and ukiyo-e artist active during the late Edo and Meiji periods.
He called himself Gaki (Painting Demon) and Kyōsai (Mad Sai), and was a rebellious figure who was imprisoned for drawing satirical cartoons that fiercely criticized the government.
He studied the Kano school and greedily incorporated techniques from the Tosa and Shijo schools, fusing them with his extraordinary drawing skills to create a highly acclaimed original style.
In his later years, he focused on mentoring younger artists, and Josiah Conder, a foreign architect who designed buildings like the Rokumeikan, also studied under Kyōsai.
