About Kazuo Kakurai:

Kazuo Kakurai was a Japanese painter who dedicated his life to depicting the world of flowers, birds, wind, and moon with rich emotion.

Born in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1919. After graduating from the former Ibaraki Prefectural Ota Junior High School in 1928, he entered the Japanese Painting Department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, where he studied under Hoshun Yamaguchi. He began exhibiting his major works after the war. In 1947, his work Hayashi (Forest) was selected for the 3rd Nitten exhibition, and he also exhibited at the 2nd Sozo Bijutsu exhibition in 1949. From the 8th Nitten exhibition in 1952 onwards, he exhibited every year. His work Nagare (Flow), which decoratively captures the flow of a clear river and stones submerged in water, received the Special Award Hakuzyu in 1958 at the 1st Shin Nitten exhibition. Thereafter, he was exempted from jury duty and invited to exhibit at the same exhibition, becoming a member in 1967. In 1980, his work Seien (Blue Garden), a magnificent depiction of peacocks, was exhibited at the 12th Nitten exhibition, earning him the Japan Art Academy Prize the following year. In 1989, he was recommended as a member of the Japan Art Academy. In the spring of 1995, he held My Vision: Kazuo Kakurai Exhibition in New York, which garnered attention.
