Description
This is a Koshu Tsuchi-dorei (earthen bell) and a representative work by Gakunan Saito, the Yumi-hari Suzudama.
The overall width is approximately 25 cm, and the bells are about 2 cm.
Gakunan Saito, a folk toy craftsman from Kofu City, Yamanashi Prefecture, creates many Tsuchi-dorei, including Oyako Daruma. This Yumi-hari Suzudama features five clay bells attached to a bow-shaped branch, which create a cool, layered sound when shaken. This work is based on a handmade bow made by tying a rope to a small branch, which Takeda Shingen is said to have played with in his childhood. The clay bells are adorned with green, yellow, red, white, and blue Japanese paper, representing the universe as a whole.
This is an older piece.
