Wood Carving Vermilion Tame-nuri Lacquerware
This is an incense container featuring a beautiful peony pattern carved into wood and finished with vermilion tame-nuri lacquer.
After applying the top layer of vermilion lacquer, a matte finish is applied, and then the piece is finished with ki-ro urushi (highest quality lacquer), resulting in an overall deep chocolate color.
It has a beautiful, deep dark brown color with a subtle reddish hue.

The tsui in tsuishu means to stack, and by carving wood and layering vermilion lacquer, then finishing with a hard lacquer, it becomes extremely durable lacquerware.
Made with the finest materials,
it will develop a beautiful sheen with use.

Murakami City in Niigata Prefecture is an old castle town, and the origin of tsuishu is said to be when a lacquer craftsman from Kyoto brought the technique during the Edo period.
This is called Murakami Wood Carving Vermilion Lacquerware, or Murakami Tsuishu.
With continued use, the color and luster increase, making it a lacquerware with deep character.
Murakami Wood Carving Vermilion Lacquerware has gained attention as an artistically distinctive craft.
In February 1955, it was designated as Niigata Prefecture Intangible Cultural Property.
In February 1976, it was designated as a national Traditional Craft as Murakami Wood Carving Vermilion Lacquerware by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry (then Minister of International Trade and Industry).
