This is a traditional Chinese ceramic item called Tianjin Clay Doll, with masks made of pottery.
(I looked it up online.)
My grandfather purchased this about 20 years ago during a trip to China.
It seems to include characters from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms from Chinese opera, but there are no bookmarks or instructions, so I'm not sure. At a glance, there are 68 pieces, and no two masks are the same, so it's fun just to look at them.
They are powerful, intelligent, and auspicious decorations.
The dedicated box is damaged, but the miniature ceramic masks inside are in mostly beautiful condition. There are some signs of age-related deterioration in places, so we ask for your understanding regarding long-term home storage.
