This is a mimikakushi (half bonnet) tailored for Ichimatsu dolls.
Inspired by the mimikakushi hairstyle popular during the Taisho period, it is crafted into a gentle shape that nestles close to the face. It is designed to fit a size 12 (42cm) Ichimatsu doll.
Materials
The outer fabric is made from rare Edo-chirimen silk that has been part of my collection for many years. To complement the pale and delicate dyeing of Edo-chirimen, I have hand-embroidered it using two strands of silk thread (Photo 9).
The edges of the outer fabric and the lining are made from a thin, dark navy chirimen silk from the Meiji to Taisho periods (Photo 4). Its supple texture, similar to Edo-chirimen, sharply enhances the colors of the outer fabric.
Design and Craftsmanship
A lace flower ornament is placed slightly higher than where the ears would be covered. The center of the flower is adorned with pearl beads and pale purple glass beads, adding a gentle touch of elegance.
Beside the flower ornament, two sagari (hanging ornaments) are attached.
The white cords used for these sagari are antique silk cords, and the white fabric-wrapped elements were found at an antique shop in Kyoto (Photo 8). Considering the overall harmony, pale purple beads are also attached here, creating an evocative finish that sways gently with the doll's movements.
Specifications
Tying Cords: Made from extremely thin silk (Photo 2). The raw edge finish is utilized, so please trim the ends neatly when adjusting the length.
Texture: Lightly padded with cotton inside to maintain a soft shape. It has a gentle, fluffy feel.

This piece was meticulously crafted stitch by stitch using Edo-chirimen silk, which is now difficult to obtain. I hope it will be cherished by someone who appreciates the unique power of old fabrics and the warmth of handmade work.
