Vintage CELADON KOREAN Sanggam Inlaid MAEBYEONG VASE / Crackle Glaze / SIGNED
Korean
This Korean Inlaid Celadon (Goryeo Cheong-ja) vase was made in the 1980s and reproduces the legendary Sanggam (inlay) technique. The decoration is not painted on, the potter actually carves the designs into the wet clay and fills the spaces with contrasting colors of slip clay. The deep pinkish-red accents on the flower buds are achieved using copper oxide (Josaeng-cheongja). This is an incredibly difficult technique, as copper-red is highly volatile in the kiln and can easily burn away or turn gray if the temperature fluctuates. The potter has signed it on the bottom in black slip before it was glazed. The vase measures 5.25 inches tall by 3.25 inches wide and is in remarkable condition,
