Italian Leather Decanter Tall Slim Map Panel Wax Seal Design Bottle

The panel is a printed antique map with a ring of armorial wax seals down one face, laid onto parchment coloured leather and sealed under a clear finish. It is the decorative language of the grand tour souvenir: make the object look like it came out of a chancery, and the buyer supplies the rest of the story themselves. The form is a tall square section bottle, slim enough to stand in a bookcase rather than on a bar, with dark brown leather bands top and bottom and a squared wooden stopper. That proportion is deliberate. A round decanter belongs on a tray; this one belongs on a shelf, next to books, which is exactly where the trade expected it to end up. Florentine leather workshops produced these by the thousand for export through the middle of the last century, and the decorated panels came in a handful of themes: maps, hunting scenes, sailing ships, heraldry. The map is the one people actually hunt for. Glass core, leather skin, wooden stopper. Nothing about it has changed in sixty years except the colour of the leather, which has improved.
