It can be used normally by turning on the power while pressing [UP], [DOWN], and [WRITE] each time you start it. (This returns it to factory default settings and clears the memory.)
I considered attaching a battery holder to the circuit board, but it seems like a failed product from when I purchased it used. To modify it to attach a battery holder, I would need to remove the circuit board and draw out the negative terminal from the back. Since I don't have time for modifications, I will attach a new battery holder and new batteries. For those skilled with a soldering iron, this should be a great deal.
Other than that, I have confirmed that it is in normal working condition.
