The Sierra Cup originated as a membership card distributed by the Sierra Club, founded in 1892 by John Muir, a conservationist and legendary figure of the long trail. This original Sierra Cup was designed as a simple cooking utensil and tableware for mountaineering and outdoor activities, characterized by its durability for direct flame use and stackable shape.
The original Sierra Cup is made of stainless steel with a wire handle that goes all the way around the body. The part that touches the mouth is slightly thicker, allowing for safe drinking of hot beverages. With a capacity of approximately 300cc, it can also be used as a measuring cup and can be utilized as a cooking utensil for stir-frying, boiling, and warming. Its considerable weight makes it stable even on a gas stove, emphasizing its ease of use outdoors.
The original Sierra Cup is currently difficult to obtain, and the original USA-made models are no longer sold due to model changes. Today, lightweight Sierra Cups made of titanium and other materials are sold by various manufacturers, with a wide variety of sizes and materials available. Among collectors and outdoor enthusiasts, the original model is particularly popular, appreciated for its unique heft and ease of use.
