The mechanism for measuring position on Earth using artificial satellites is called satellite positioning (GNSS/Global Navigation Satellite System). GPS (Global Positioning System) is a US system and one of the GNSS, but it is often used as a general term for satellite positioning.
Currently, GNSS information has become something used daily, as exemplified by the GPS function of smartphones. It now supports social infrastructure such as logistics and communication. Furthermore, it is attracting attention as a technology for automatically moving things, such as autonomous vehicles, autonomous mobile robots, construction machinery, and agricultural machinery, whose development is progressing. Recently, it has become easier for general engineers to try using GNSS data, as smartphone apps can now acquire raw GNSS data, and receiver prices have decreased compared to before.
This article introduces the utilization of GNSS data from its basics to its application in manufacturing, such as autonomous robot movement, and its use in data analysis for sports fields and ship positioning.
