After retiring at the end of the May 1992 tournament, the elder HAKKAKU (former Yokozuna HOKUTOUmi), who had been coaching junior wrestlers as a stablemaster attached to the KOKONOE stable, founded the HAKKAKU stable in October 1993 by splitting off with four disciples, including HOKUSHORYU. At the same time, all the elders who were attached to the KOKONOE stable at the time, including JINMAKU (former Yokozuna KITANOFUJI), KIMIGAHAMA (former Sekiwake KITASEUMI), TANIGAWA (former Makunouchi SHIRATAYAMA), and NISHIKIDO (former Makunouchi FUJINOSHIN), also transferred. The stable's building was also a partial renovation of the former IZUTSU stable ~ KOKONOE stable, which was previously used by HAKKAKU's master, Kitanofuji.
To date, the stable has produced nine Sekitori wrestlers, including Sekiwake HOKUSHORYU, OKINOUmi, and Komusubi KAIHO. Many wrestlers have been given names that include characters from their master's active sumo names, such as HOSHI, HOKUSHOU, and UMI.
