Description
Scientific Name: Synhoria maxillosa (Cissites cephalotes)
A brightly colored vermilion beetle. Mandibles, antennae, and legs are black. Males have large heads and mandibles.
This is a southern species, but in recent years its distribution has expanded, and it can now be found in warmer regions of Honshu.
The larvae grow by parasitizing the nests of carpenter bees.
The body fluid contains a toxic substance called cantharidin, which causes inflammation upon contact with skin.
Please note that we cannot guarantee against grade reduction due to shipping.
We will ship a specimen from Mount Halimun, West Java, Indonesia. It was collected in January 2019.
My measurement of the body length was 33mm.
