This is a tasteful salt-glazed sake set made in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture.
It has been stored in its original paulownia box, in new and unused condition.
Mashiko ware is a historic pottery that has been produced since the late Edo period, characterized by its warm and rustic texture.
This particular sake set is made using a special technique called salt glazing (en'yu), where salt is introduced into the kiln during firing.
The natural burnt brown color, deep brown, and beautiful blue hues created by the kiln's transformation, resulting from high-temperature firing, give each piece a unique character.
The sake flask (tokkuri) has a comfortable design with two indentations on the body, fitting snugly in your hand. It is a convenient size, approximately 11cm in height and about 9cm at its widest point. As a testament to its handcrafted nature, the marks from the potter's wheel appear like waves on the surface, conveying the warmth of handmade craftsmanship.
The sake cups (sakazuki) are a generous size, approximately 6cm in diameter and 4cm in height, allowing you to slowly savor your Japanese sake.
This item was carefully kept by my mother, and I would like to pass it on to someone who appreciates Japanese culture and the warmth of handmade crafts.
It comes in a paulownia box.
