Tato-gami - specialized paper for storing kimonos.
What is Tato-gami?
Tato-gami is a special wrapping paper used for storing kimonos.

The name varies by region. Besides tato-shi and tato-gami, they are also called bunko-shi or bunko-gami, and many other names. (In some areas, the same term tato-gami might refer to kaishi paper or isho-jiki.)

The main roles of tato-gami are: ① Mold prevention ② Dust and dirt prevention ③ Wrinkle prevention.

① Mold Prevention
As the name suggests, tato-gami is made of paper and is expected to have moisture-absorbing properties. If moisture builds up in chests of drawers or closets, it can cause mold. Wrapping your kimono in tato-gami, which absorbs moisture, provides peace of mind.

② Dust and Dirt Prevention
Even when stored in chests of drawers or closets, dust tends to accumulate over time. Wrapping your kimono in tato-gami prevents dust and dirt from directly settling on the fabric.

③ Wrinkle Prevention
When kimonos are stacked directly on top of each other or folded and placed in paper bags, they tend to develop unwanted wrinkles. Wrapping each kimono individually in tato-gami makes it less likely for wrinkles to form, even when stacked.
