Description
This is a listing for a Haori (Japanese jacket) made of Murayama Oshima Tsumugi, traditionally produced in the Musashimurayama City area of Tokyo.

Murayama Oshima was designated as a Tokyo Metropolitan Intangible Cultural Property in 1967. In 1975, it was registered as a Traditional Craft Product designated by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.

The Haori being offered for sale is handwoven using pre-dyed silk threads.

The base color is charcoal gray, with indigo and light blue絣 (kasuri - splashed pattern) threads woven into Murayama's characteristic hexagonal pattern.

It is unknown if the kimono is sold separately, but only the Haori is being listed.

A set of men's kimono and Haori, where the top and bottom are matched, is the standard and is called an ensemble.

Recently, there seems to be a growing trend of considering a slight difference between the top and bottom as stylish.

Not only completely different combinations of colors and materials, but even slight differences in material or shade can create a change in image.

In the case of men's wear, many combinations work well, making it easy to mix and match.

The lining (額裏 - gakura) is made of a pure silk fabric similar to Habutae, featuring a depiction of a landscape with Mt. Fuji from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji by the ukiyo-e artist Katsushika Hokusai. (Photos 9 and 10 show the weave of the fabric similar to Habutae.)

It is unknown if these paintings are Hokusai's works.

Dimensions (in cm):
Haori Length (back): 92
Sleeve span (Yuki): 68.5
Sleeve width: 34.5
Sleeve length: 50
Back width: 30.5
Front width: 19.5

Although the Haori still has basting threads, there are some dye splashes on the Haori lining.
It appears the steaming or water treatment to fix the dye after dyeing was insufficient. (Photos 5 and 6)

We are listing this item with the hope that those who already own a kimono will check if this Haori fits their kimono in terms of size, and consider purchasing it if it does.

The following are potential size issues between a Haori and a kimono:

The kimono's length (身丈 - mitake) is typically about 50 cm longer than the Haori.
The kimono's sleeve span (裄 - yuki) is usually about 7 mm shorter than the Haori.

Other dimensions are likely to be hidden by the Haori when worn.

The main dimensional issue is the kimono potentially showing from beneath the Haori.

We have checked for stains and dirt as thoroughly as possible, but please understand that there may be oversights.

These are images taken with a digital camera. Please note that colors may vary depending on your monitor.

Photos 10, 11, 13, and 14 are magnified images taken with a USB microscope.

The Haori cord used for the photos (used item) will be included.
