Description
Vintage figural duck server made by Bordallo Pinheiro of Caldas da Rainha, Portugal. The spoon has some black scuffs and scraping of the glaze as pictured to the backside. Moderate crazing noted to the piece, no chips or cracks. I would imagine this would work well as a sugar bowl, condiment server, or gravy boat. Some history for those interested: Bordallo Pinheiro is famous for making majolica pottery. Majolica is a type of earthenware ceramic known for its brightly colored glazes, painted over a white base. The brand is especially well-known for its nature-inspired designs, like the iconic cabbage leaf dishes. The factory was started in Portugal by artist Rafael Bordalo Pinheiro in 1884. He combined traditional Portuguese pottery methods with the majolica style. Because majolica uses traditional hand-painting and natural glazes, older vintage pieces can sometimes show crazing, which is a fine network of cracks in the shiny topcoat.
